Mazda Announces New Compact SUV Will be Mazda CX-5

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that its all-new compact crossover SUV, which is scheduled to launch in the UK in 2012, will be called the Mazda CX-5.

All-new, the Mazda CX-5 is the production model derived from the Mazda MINAGI concept car, which made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, and has also been shown at the New York International Auto Show in April 2011.

The CX-5 will be the first production vehicle to incorporate Mazda’s ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design theme that premiered on the Mazda SHINARI concept car last year. When it appears in Mazda showrooms around the world next year, the compact SUV will feature a full range of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV technologies, including new-generation engines, transmissions, bodyshell design and chassis engineering.

The “CX” in CX-5 is Mazda’s official designation for its global line-up of crossover SUV vehicles, which also includes the Mazda CX-7 and Mazda CX-9 – depending on individual markets. The
CX-5 will be the compact model in the series.

In production form, the Mazda CX-5 has made its international debut at this year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show held in Germany in September – before going on sale in the U.K. in May 2012.

Mazda drives into the future with SKYACTIV for U.K. in late 2011/ early 2012

• SKYACTIV petrol and diesel engines with record compression ratios
• New manual and automatic transmissions
• SKYACTIV bodyshell and chassis much lighter and more agile

Mazda Motor Corporation has published new details about its next-generation powertrain technologies with the name SKYACTIV. These include completely new engines, transmissions, bodyshells and platforms that will be launched in 2011 making major reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for all Mazda models possible. This process will initially concentrate on lightweight construction as a core value of the brand, along with the optimisation of conventional powertrain technologies. In further phases, efficiency improving technologies, such as regenerative brake systems and hybrid power systems, will be successively introduced. Mazda’s goal is to lower the fuel consumption of its global fleet by 30 percent by 2015 (compared to 2008).

Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G petrol engine, for instance, will achieve fuel consumption levels (without the use of electric components) that until now have been the reserve of hybrid powertrains. This high-efficiency direct-injection petrol engine employs a compression ratio of 14.0:1, the highest compression ratio ever used in a production petrol engine anywhere in the world. This enables the engine to use 15 percent less fuel and also contributes to a 15 percent increase in torque output. Higher torque at low and mid-range engine speeds means better driveability with less fuel consumption in everyday driving.

The new SKYACTIV-D diesel engine also sets a new record for compression ratio at 14.0:1, which is the lowest ever employed for a diesel engine. This results in a drop in fuel consumption of 20 percent and especially clean combustion. Without expensive after-treatment to reduce NOx, the new Mazda SKYACTIV-D engine will meet future Euro 6 emission standards. A two-phase turbocharger delivers smooth and linear responses from low to high engine speeds and increases low and high-end torque up to the rev limit of 5,200 rpm.

Mazda has developed a new SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission as part of its SKYACTIV technology that combines the advantages of a conventional automatic transmission, a continuously-variable transmission and a double-clutch transmission. The dramatically widened lock-up range increases the efficiency of the torque converter, improves torque transfer efficiency, and gives a direct driving feel that is comparable to a manual transmission. The new SKYACTIV-Drive delivers improved fuel economy of up to 7 percent compared to a current, conventional torque-converter automatic transmission.

The new SKYACTIV-MT is an especially lightweight and compact manual transmission with reduced internal friction that contributes to lowering fuel consumption. Its compact size allows for efficient vehicle packaging, while its short selector stroke and light shift feel are reminiscent of a sportscar.

Mazda is convinced that lowering vehicle weight is a key factor in lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. A central role in this will be played by the new body structure SKYACTIV-Body and the vehicle platform SKYACTIV-Chassis. The newly-developed, high-strength bodyshell is 8 percent lighter and 30 percent stiffer, and combines outstanding crash safety with an excellent foundation for agile handling attributes. Less weight is achieved for the most part by increased use of high-tensile steels and optimised bonding materials. The new SKYACTIV-Chassis comes with a newly-developed suspension that is 14 percent lighter than the current suspension and delivers precise handling and high quality ride comfort.

Mazda announces New Design Theme: ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’

Mazda Motor Corporation today announced Mazda’s new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’, and revealed the Mazda Shinari concept car, the first vehicle to embody this new theme. Since launching its first passenger car, the Mazda R360 Coupe, exactly 50 years ago, Mazda has spent many years exploring the concept of ‘motion,’ offering customers designs that were exciting both to view and to drive.

Since the launch of the ‘Zoom-Zoom’ brand message in 2000, Mazda has pursued the concept of more athletic and sporty motion, and has adopted dynamic designs for all Mazda models starting with the Mazda6 and followed by the RX-8 sports coupe and the lightweight Mazda2. In recent years, this motion-based design philosophy has been further extended to incorporate the theme of ‘motion inspired by nature’, featured in the Mazda Nagare concept car series and the new Mazda5 now reaching UK dealer showrooms.

As a result of these initiatives, since the launch of the first Mazda6 in 2002, Mazda design has been widely acclaimed, receiving 30 major accolades together with a variety of prestigious automotive awards.

Ikuo Maeda, the head of Mazda’s Design Division, explains the new KODO design theme in this way: “In our work to further evolve the expression of motion, Mazda Design has focused on the strength, beauty and tension found in the ‘instantaneous movement’ of animals at the very moment that the motion begins. This motion is so full of vitality that it stirs the emotions of those who see it. We have named it ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’, and our aim is to express movement with forceful vitality and speed, embodying this design theme in Mazda’s upcoming models.”

Maeda continues, “Mazda’s four design studios located in Japan (Hiroshima and Yokohama), Europe (Frankfurt, Germany), and North America (Irvine, California) are currently combining to
take up the challenge we have set them to achieve a breakthrough in the expression of motion in car design, and to incorporate this expression into our future products.”

Mazda SHINARI
Mazda Shinari is a four-door, four-seater, sports coupe and a pure expression of the new design theme in its idealised form. Mazda Shinari showcases several new design elements that will carry forward into production, and represents the first initiative by Mazda Design to express ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’.

The Japanese word shinari describes the powerful yet supple appearance of great resilient force when objects of high tensile strength, such as steel or bamboo, are twisted or bent. It also refers to the appearance of a person or animal as it flexes its muscles in preparation for a fast movement, and it is these images that form the basis for the name of this concept car.

With a feeling of strength flowing across every panel and part, the Mazda Shinari looks ready to leap forwards at any second. Its form incorporates the expression of a strong backbone running through the body, the sudden release of pent-up energy, and the interplay of beautiful, supple movements. The distinctive front fenders represent the further evolution of the prominent fenders introduced on the RX-8. They highlight the dynamic movement expressed in the sides of Shinari , in a style that is both sporty and elegant.

Together with the further three-dimensional sculpting of the front grille, the Shinari design proudly emphasises the Mazda lineage. There is a powerful line of movement originating at the grille and continuing through the bonnet, fender, front lamp modules and bumper. Finally, an aluminium floating bar linking the grille with the headlights enhances the three-dimensional expression of speed.

In the interior, Mazda Design has created the ‘ultimate athletic space’ focused on linking ergonomics with basic mechanical functions. It has designed the optimum space for the driver’s cockpit, to enable the driver to focus on the task of driving, as well as the passenger environment, creating a sense of openness. In this model, Mazda offers new ideas for the human-machine interface in cockpit design, enabling the driver to switch at will between three modes: Business, Pleasure and Sport, to obtain the maximum enjoyment from driving – whatever the purpose of the journey.
